The rat has no language

Every line below is written from telemetry — which units fired, which page, which veto, which paper fill. First person is a costume. The fly has the same rule. Numbers are checked. Trading-speak is thrown away.

RATMIND

Nineteen times the fly. One honest gap. Same chain.

The fly is a real nervous system. Every connection on flybrain.online was traced from electron microscope images of an actual male fruit fly: 165,122 neurons, 10,228,000 signed synapses. Nothing here pretends the rat has that. The gap is the pitch.

There is no complete EM wiring diagram of a whole rat brain. RATMIND runs 3,145,729 individually stateful leaky integrate-and-fire units and 12,582,916 directed edges with a fixed out-degree of four. Those are engineering parameters from the BrainRat controller, not reconstructed anatomy. A 211,712-neuron open subvolume of juvenile rat primary somatosensory cortex (Blue Brain) is the largest public morphological piece we cite. The Swanson collated rat connectome gives 790 gray-matter regions and about 76,940 interregional tracts. Whiskers, place cells, grid cells and head-direction cells are taken from published physiology.

Each unit is a leaky integrate-and-fire neuron: rest −70 mV, threshold −50 mV, τ 20 ms, 1 ms steps. Twenty milliseconds of model time per browser decision. The only free parameters are per-channel gains. Wiring is not trained.

It feels with a rat’s face and walks with a rat’s legs

The fly sees with 892 retinotopic hex columns into L1 and L2. The rat is worse at vision and better at touch. A live page — here, a fenced corpus sampled the way the fly’s roam is fenced — is reduced to luminance and geometry, then pushed through barrels. All 3,145,729 units integrate. The cursor comes back out of motor channels a rat actually walks with.

  Thirty macrovibrissae, five rows. Edges in the page become deflections. Text is texture. The rat does not read.

• Place / grid / HD

  Sixty-four place, thirty-six grid, twelve head-direction channels. They treat the scroll box as a room. That is a mapping, not a hippocampus.

• M1 / RSC

  Forward, reverse, turn. Asymmetry between left and right turn channels drives the cursor’s x. Forward drives y.

• Sniff → click

  A freeze-and-sample burst in the whisker pad becomes a click, the way DNp09 became a click in the fly.

Not a roadmap of promises — a sequence, with everything before the rust line already running in this page and everything after it labelled locked until a person mints.

The parts that aren’t the rat

• This is not a reconstructed rat brain.

  Population size and connectivity are engineering parameters. The Blue Brain S1 subvolume and the Swanson region graph are cited, not loaded as an EM connectome.

• The rat cannot read.

  Thirty whiskers and a coarse luminance field. Text is texture. It targets contrast, not the right box.

• The mesh is a stand-in body.

  The GLB is a stylized rat (CC-BY-NC-4.0, AnimalMesh 3D). It is not the Harvard/DeepMind virtual rodent, not MuJoCo, not an animal.

• The live page is a fenced corpus.

  This observatory does not open a real Chromium in your browser. The fly’s host does that on a machine. Here the roam is simulated against an allowlist the fly actually uses — Wikipedia, Gutenberg, xkcd, arXiv, the fly’s own page, the launchpad. That is labelled.

• The voice is a narrator.

  The rat has no language. Any first-person line is written from telemetry. Neurons, pages, fees — when they exist — are real. Words, and any confusion in them, are not.

• The reward signal is invented.

  Reaching a new page stands in for sugar. A veto stands in for bitter. The direction of the rule is biological. The substitution is a person’s.

• It has no goals.

  Releasing it means nobody is steering, not that it decided anything. Browsing is a fair word. Deciding is not.

• The coin is not minted.

  No dev supply, no opening buy, no explorer link. When it launches it should be from the rat’s wallet the way the fly’s was. Until a person turns that on, PENDING is the whole fact.

• Not a living animal. Not an investment.

  Not financial advice. The fly’s market is other people’s. This page does not quote it.
